Today, I attended another wonderful training about R T I and I sat with a variety of ladies (mostly administrators from many districts). All were very friendly and curious about who I was and where I'm at. At first, I alluded to the neighborhood that I am providing service to. I suppose that didn't satisfy some of their curiosities so one asked me straight out which district I am working in.
Lately, I've been saying, "!ng!e-hoOOOOood!" (a play on how Mac 10 and other rappers rapped back in the days) only to my BF. So when the lady asked me which district I'm at, I said in a normal tone, "!ng!ehood." I didn't realize what I had said until she asked for clarification, "!ng!ewood?" "M-hm."
I can't believe I slipped like that! Thankfully, there was a lot of background noise and both the "h" and "w" are produced in an open-mouth position so it wasn't very obvious.
I am such a dork!

Coffee Break
This is a cheesy confession~
When I was in college, I used to study all the time at coffee shops. That was the thing to do. We'd go to the coffee shops in Downtown La Jolla, Pacific Beach, or just stay on campus. Me, being the coffee lover, longed for the day that I could just sit at Starbucks and chat with friends as if I didn't have a care in the world (likeworking or studying).
After a chaotic 4 weeks of 490 and 5 weeks of 557, K3 and I made it a point to meet for a coffee/chai tea date to ketchup, talk shop, and "exchange 411 re: our S.O.'s bidness." We chatted, laughed, discussed, and pontificated until the sun went down. I had soOOOooOoOooo much fun, especially in light of "pretending" to be a chic L.A. person having coffee with a good friend as if we weren't in the middle of a crazy quarter and counting down the minutes before class began. It was great. :)
To continue on in the good vibes, our Outstanding Service Prof let us out early! Second time in a row!
AND that's not all!
At home, I opened up a sweet, cute card from BSILF that thanked BF & I for a teeny favor...and out fell a Sbux GC! Oh goody goody! Or, should I say "yumm in my tum." ;) Thx BSILF! :D

Happy Birthday to my Cousins!
Birthday shout-outs! :)
January 30th was Younger Genius Cousin's birthday. He is legally an adult now. =O
Yesterday was BGF's birthday. :) I can't believe we've known each other for 9 years now. She is so amazing in countless ways. She has taught me so many life lessons throughout the years. Most importantly, she has taught me about love, friendship, and joy. I love her to pieces.
Today is Future Doctor Cousin's birthday. She turned the big deuce-deuce! I sent her a ka-razy Hello Kitty e-card that I specifically searched for. :) She's been busy finishing up her last nerdy year at Cal and flying all over the States for med school interviews. I had no idea what a closet nerd she was until last year. Man, my family is full of nerds!
Happy birthday to my loved ones!

Lock Down
Today, I lived life on the dangerous side. Unintentionally, of course.
For the first time, I experienced a Lock Down. (Thankfully, BSILF explained what a Lock Down was, before our practicum began.) So yesterday, I was at Site 3, deemed the "worst of the worst." I was observing really tiny tots in the AM (holy moly, little boys are a bundle of insanely high NRG!), and frolicked back to the small potatoes' side mid-morning with the intention of getting some Dx hours. Instead, I worked on my first report and had lunch in the Teacher's Lounge w/ MC2.
During lunch, I flipped through the C S H A program and saw that one of my wonderful profs will be honored at the convention! I was all excited and telling MC2, when I stopped mid-sentence and exclaimed, "OMG! [BSILF] also won an award!" I was a little embarrassed b/c I exclaimed that BSILF is one of my classmate and a really good friend. Embarrassed b/c I didn't want her to think, "Well, if she's your good friend, then wouldn't you have known about this already?"
Well, it turns out that BSILF didn't even know! Crazy! Congratulations to BSILF for the Outstanding Student Award! :D
After the excitement, we went back to the room to finish up reports. Around 1 PM, Mrs. A barged in saying she barely escaped being caught by Security (she didn't evacuate when she was supposed to). Turns out there was a bomb threat called at the Tiny Tots' site (literally 1/4 of a block away from us) so they had all evacuated onto the front lawn. Now, having witnessed only 2 rambunctious boys at a time for half hour sessions was already exhausting enough. I couldn't imagine the thought of 90+ high NRG boys and girls out there.
We thought we were safe so we continued working until 10 minutes later, we heard a loOooOong bell. I had no clue what that meant, but Ms. M peeped outside to see if we had to evacuate. Nope; not a soul outside. She called the Main Office to get the low-down.
Turns out we were on Lock Down. Dude, whatever happened to fire and earthquake drills? As paranoid a person that I've become, I guess I didn't really think there was a serious bomb threat. On the other hand, this wasn't a Lock Down drill. It was for reals. After that settled in, melodramatic images filled my mind. I envisioned the SWAT team outside, investigating a mysterious package. I don't think that's what really happened, though.
MC2 and I eventually snuck out thru the cafeteria and left unscathed and unharmed. What a risky day it was.
Today, I got the scoop. The 50 interrogated all the JH kids and supposedly took the juve delinquents into custody. Apparently, the same kids were at Site 2 two days prior, committing the same act (but I was at Site 1 so I missed that commotion). Not to mention, yesterday at Site 2 (where I was today), a HUGE fight broke out b/t two races. Glad I missed that.
I'm too young to get life insurance, aren't I?
P.S. I categorized this under "Rarities" with the hopes that this is a rarity!

Language Disorder
It's been a while since I diagnosed myself. I typically say that I have ADD because my attention span really is short. It certainly makes studying for classes like dysphagia extremely difficult.
The other day, while I engaged in a group therapy session with MC1, I believe I have convinced MC1 to think that I have a language disorder that is more severe than her little elementary school kiddos -- who are adorable by the way.
We played a round of "Go Fish" with her 4th and 5th graders. MC1 likes to use her deck of "What's Wacky?" language cards to play because each student must describe the picture card that they want in complete, detailed sentences (Goals targeted: Wh-questions, inverted sentence structure, sentence expansion, details, & pragmatics). Who knew that it would become an informal assessment to determine that I have a language disorder?

I was laughing, too (but partially out of embarrassment). What's fun about MC1 is that she will make "grown-up" jokes/comments that these kiddos wouldn't understand (at that age). I think it keeps her sane, though, so I can't hate on her for that.
Me: J, do you have a card with a man sitting in a jacuzzi wearing winter clothes?
J: No, go fish.
MC1 heartily laughing: J, I think Ms. Liang comes from a wealthier area where people have jacuzzis and spas. The picture she is asking for is of three people sitting in a plastic swimming pool with one man wearing winter clothes.
Me: E, do you have a snowman that is sweating in a desert?I swear I'm like fresh off the boat!
E: Go fish.
MC1 laughing again: Ms. Liang, do you mean to ask E if he has a snowman that is melting in the desert?

Excuses, Excuses -- Another Ketchup
Much to my dismay, I haven't had much time to blog lately. Unfortunately, I'll have to do another ketchup:
Since I had the day off, BF and I visited FBM and BBN. We went bowling in their hood. As usual, we had a blast with BBN. That kid is such a character! Unfortunately, BF and I both caught whatever they had so we've both been under the weather.
I never thought I'd be doing this at home, but yesterday was the first time I used anti-bacterial gel at home! BF's been Lysoling everything, and I've been rubbing my hands with that gel all the live long day b/c we don't have the same symptoms -- and I can't afford to get what he has!
The end.

I had my hospital placement interview and to my great relief, it was painless and I left with my pride still in tact. I have to admit that since we began taking dysphagia this quarter, I've been hesitant about working with adults/in the hospital. However, I am placed in the acute rehab unit...hence, many of my concerns and hesitations were allayed. After all, I'm just not that great at simultaneously "thinking on my feet" and "out of the box." In the acute rehab unit, I will still have to use my brain, but there won't be the burden of life-and-death decisions won't be as heavy. Okay, not exactlylife-and-death, but pretty serious decisions. Good thing, b/c I am such an indecisive person. The last thing a patient needs is for me to stand before them, thinking aloud, "Should I give you a VFSS or FEES?"January 14
Bro had his big Tres-0 b-day gig at the Daily Grill. That was tons of fun, I got to see a few of his friends that I haven't seen in a long time. I also ate about half of the items on the appetizer menu. OoOOOoO, FBIL bought a delicious cake from Angel Maid Bakery. It was definitely heavenly. (I'll post pixs when I get them.) Most importantly, my bro had a great time catching up with friends who came from all over to celebrate his birthday. :)January 15
MLK Day! (No school day!) I have to admit that I have not given MLK much thought since elementary school, but being placed where I'm at has given me the opportunity to revisit other cultures (and respective holidays) and also think about my own. The Thursday before MLK, I heard the following conversation between one of the kiddos and MC2:
K: Are you going to give us something tomorrow? It was kind of funny, but beyond that, I thought about the importance of us respecting each other's ethicities, cultures, and traditions. After the Kiddo left, MC2 scrambled around to prepare something "special" for MLK Day. On Friday, they went over a book on MLK. :) My kids are soOOooOo curious that it's adorable. I am such a novelty b/c they rarely see Asians. Some of them are almost afraid to talk to me. Others keep asking me questions. I like that they are curious and openly ask questions.
MC2: For what?
K: Monday's a holiday. It's MLK Day.

Happy Birthday to the Best Big Brother!
Today, my bro turned the big tres-oh! :D
This morning, I thanked God for my big brother. I really don't know what I'd do without him. He has always been there for me, from even before my earliest memories. Whenever I think of earlier memories, I have this one picture in my head. I was still an infant, just chillin' in my babyseat carriage, staring at my bro. My brother-- with his awesome permy afro -- was sitting in his rocking chair, pretending to read to me. It's one of my favorite pictures because it makes me think of how much my brother has always loved and care for me even before I knew who he was.
In 30 years, my brother has accomplished so much. I admire him for his personality, success, wit, compassion, thoughtfulness, genuineness, generosity, finesse, confidence, and zeal. Above all, I admire him for his ability to seduce.
j/k!
Happy birthday, Guh. I love you to pieces.
